Freelance Payments Specialist

Role Overview

British Council is seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Freelance Payments Specialist to join its finance operations team in New Delhi. This role is responsible for managing end-to-end payment processes, ensuring timely and accurate disbursements to freelancers and vendors, and maintaining compliance with internal financial policies and applicable regulations. The ideal candidate brings a strong understanding of accounts payable, payment workflows, and financial reconciliation in a professional services environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Process and manage freelancer and vendor payments in accordance with established timelines and approval workflows
  • Verify invoices, payment requests, and supporting documentation for accuracy and completeness
  • Coordinate with internal teams to resolve payment discrepancies, queries, and escalations
  • Maintain accurate records of all transactions and ensure proper documentation for audit purposes
  • Reconcile payment accounts and assist in month-end closing activities
  • Ensure compliance with tax regulations, including TDS deductions and other statutory requirements
  • Liaise with banks and financial institutions to facilitate smooth payment processing
  • Identify and recommend process improvements to enhance payment efficiency and accuracy

Requirements / Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Commerce, or a related field
  • Demonstrated experience in payments processing, accounts payable, or a similar finance role
  • Strong understanding of payment workflows, invoice management, and financial reconciliation
  • Familiarity with Indian taxation requirements such as TDS and GST as applicable to payments
  • Proficiency in accounting software and MS Excel or similar spreadsheet tools
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Effective communication skills to coordinate across departments and with external stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a freelance/contractual capacity
